The festive season is upon us and many people are heading off on their annual holiday. At this time of year the roads become very busy and a few reckless drivers can cause severe injury and damage to innocent, law abiding drivers. Accidents are a huge concern at this time of the year, so today we are going to talk to an organization that support and manage patients that have incurred "Traumatic Brain Injury" - HeadWay Gauteng.

Traumatic Brain Injury can happen to anyone at any time. The accident is over in a second, but the results last forever. In South Africa there are about 80 000 new traumatic brain injuries (TBI’s) per year, of which about 23 000 are classified as severe. The age group 17 – 25 being most at risk.  

In the past, most people with severe brain injuries died within the first few days, but with improved medical emergency procedures now about 80% survive, but require extensive support and rehabilitation.

Not only the survivor, but their family need support to deal with this life changing trauma. 

Today's Dreams and Donations is about Headway Gauteng. Headway Gauteng was started in 1995 by involved families and is a registered welfare organisation dedicated to offering various support programmes to TBI survivors and their families.  All funding initiatives are from private or corporate donations instigated from within the organisation.
